Compassion Counseling
Our mission is to provide counseling and education that inspires hope, builds resilience, and promotes mental health and well-being.
History of Compassion Counseling
2011: Following a series of conversations about the vision for a new community counseling center in Blount County, the former co-pastor of First United Methodist Church, Maryville, and two mental health professionals in her congregation prayerfully decided to move forward with a proposal.
2012: A steering committee was formed. FUMC included funds for CC in its Outreach budget.
2013: The steering committee decided to form a nonprofit corporation, a Governing Board was created, and models for a counseling center were explored. Following a presentation to the Blount County Ecumenical Action Council, board members learned about Samaritan Institute.
2014: A Samaritan Institute representative visited Maryville to present the Samaritan model. A formal needs assessment was conducted, and Compassion Counseling became an affiliate of the Samaritan Institute. CC developed a mission statement and obtained nonprofit status.
2015: A space at 331 West Broadway Avenue was leased, an Executive Director was hired, Compassion Counseling was born on November 10, 2015.
2017: The governing board decided to discontinue its affiliation with the Samaritan Institute due to high affiliation fees and low return on investment. At this point, Compassion Counseling became a community-based counseling center.
2019: Compassion Counseling moved to 200 E. Broadway Ave, Suite 515, Maryville, TN 37804 2
